The practice of structuring content so generative AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — cite your business directly when answering a user’s question.

Not to be confused with geolocation/“geo” targeting — different concept, same acronym.

01What is GEO, and how does it work?

Generative engines answer a question by retrieving a set of relevant sources, then synthesizing a single answer from them—often naming or linking specific sources as it does. GEO is the practice of making your content more likely to be retrieved, and more likely to be the source that gets named.

In practice, that means:

  • Clear, extractable answers — a direct statement a model can quote, not buried three paragraphs into marketing copy
  • Structured data — schema markup that tells a crawler exactly what your content is and what it covers
  • Crawler access — making sure bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot can actually read your site
  • Authority signals — citations, mentions, and reviews that make a source worth trusting and repeating

These terms overlap heavily and get used interchangeably—here’s how they actually differ:

03AI Optimization (AIO): where it fits

“AI Optimization,” “AI search optimization,” and “AI search engine optimization” are commonly searched terms that all describe the same underlying work as GEO—they’re not a separate discipline. Think of AIO as the applied, platform-specific edge of GEO: the same retrieval-and-citation mechanics, focused specifically on tools like Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.

If you’re optimizing for AI Overviews specifically, you’re doing GEO—just against one particular generative surface rather than all of them.

04How generative engines choose what to cite

Research on generative engine behavior (including the widely-cited Princeton GEO study) points to a consistent pattern: sources that are cited most often share three traits—they answer the specific question clearly and early, they carry independent credibility signals (citations, reviews, structured data), and they’re technically accessible to the crawlers each platform uses. Vague, promotional copy is retrieved less often and cited even less.
